The department of physics began at the University of Minnesota in 1889 when Frederick S. Jones was hired as professor of physics. In 1902, the first physical laboratory, now Jones Hall, was completed. The current physics laboratory building was built in 1928 and renamed the Tate Laboratory of Physics in 1963. Edward Lee Hill was born on November 3, 1904 in Hartford, Arkansas. He received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering at the University of Minnesota in 1925. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, receiving his Ph.D. degree in physics in 1928. Dr. Hill was awarded a National Research Council post doctoral fellowship and spent the next two years at Harvard University.
